Does the precision piston rod need electroplating?

Jul 14, 2024

Under normal circumstances, many mechanical products and process equipment can hardly be separated from the application of piston rods. Because the piston rod is a connecting part, it can play a role of transmission and support in different mechanical systems with linear reciprocating motion. However, the manufacturing of a piston rod product requires multiple processes such as grinding, electroplating, and polishing before it can be produced. So does the precision piston rod need electroplating?
In fact, precision piston rods need electroplating. Because the so-called electroplating refers to a process of plating a thicker chromium coating on the surface of the steel substrate. After the piston rod is electroplated, the hardness, wear resistance, temperature resistance and corrosion resistance of the parts can be increased by utilizing the characteristics of chromium.
The thickness of the precision piston rod is generally above 10-30μm. Moreover, its electroplating generally requires at least 3 times of chrome plating. When a single chrome plating is performed, its thickness should be controlled between 0.010-0.015mm. Moreover, after the first single chrome plating, it is necessary to remove the cylinder for grinding, and then chrome plate again to the required thickness to reach the required size before polishing.
