Analysis of the Causes of Piston Rod Breakage Caused by Three Points

Jun 22, 2023

In general, the broken part of the piston rod is on the connecting thread of the crosshead, or the thread position of the fastening piston, because these two places are relatively weak links of the piston rod. If neglected, or sloppy in manufacturing, breakage is common.
If it is ensured that there are no problems with the material, design and processing of the piston rod, then the pre-tightening force should not be too large during installation, otherwise the piston rod will also break due to the yield force. The following three points are the main factors causing the fracture of the piston rod:
1. Gap: Under normal circumstances, the assembly is not in place, resulting in the entire gap getting bigger and bigger during the operation.
2. Stress: The main reasons are concentrated in the connecting part of the piston rod, or the installation of the crosshead is incorrect, and the thread connected with the crosshead is broken due to the influence, or the position of the thread is pre-set. The tension is not in place.
3. Wear and tear: it will lead to loosening and gaps in the connection of the piston rod, because after long-term use, the parts of the connection will wear more seriously, and will be affected by external forces and cause the piston rod to break.
